She's saying stopped using the spurs on my side it hurts.
OK I'm only kidding.
Truly something spooked the horse. By the time you got to him it had calmed down and was willing to come back to you and her.
In the next day or two walk the area where it hap pend. See if you can find anything usual or out of place.
If you were going back the way you came originally something could have changed and spooked it.
If she did not get back on the horse today then she needs to get back on the horse tomorrow th make sure it does not scary our sister out of riding again.

As I am sure you know, bolting is very dangerous. This is a bad behavior he has learned (such as a horse that bites or kicks) in response to something he does not like. Either that be he spooked, was angry for being ridden, or was just excited because he knew he was on his way home. You really need to work with a trainer and have them show you how to flex on the poll and then how to engage his hindquarters. This would look like him touching his nose to his side while he moves his rear around. Horses cannot run away if their nose is touching their side. Explain to the trainer your situation and an experienced trainer will know what to do.

I'd say spooked as well. How was he going home? Was he really rattled, or was he in good spirits and relaxed? If he's rattled, he was scared and needs more desensitisation, if he was happy- it was a trick to dump n run, and needs more work. Either way, he needs to go back out to the trail, and soon, or you will be rewarding his behaviour. If you or your sister aren't confident enough- find someone who is. He needs to get over this behaviour because it can cause BIG problems. You don't want to not be able to ride him in case he "spookes" all the time.
Best of luck- bolting is no fun, hope you find a solution :)

Sounds like something spooked him, is he easily spooked usually? You're probably the best one to answer your own question. All horses are different.

did something spook him??
I would keep him in back for a while until you can get an experienced rider on him and they can correct this.. its probably a habit he developed with his previous owner and never corrected so now you guys have the problem....
