You need a wireless router and a wireless network card.
Linksys is a popular brand for these items, but there's other companies out there like Netgear, and maybe a few others that are just as competent. You can look at the items and read customer reviews about them on Amazon.com (I found this very helpful).
For setting it up, the wireless router is as easy to hook up as a VCR. The wireless card will just slide into your laptop. If your laptop is old then you might need an adapter, but most laptops come with a slot for the card (it's about 1-1/2 inches wide, 1/4-inch thick).
After hooking that stuff up, your computers might detect what you're doing and automatically configure themselves to setup the network. If it doesn't work so easily they have step-by-step instructions, and probably online support if you want to ask for help. Basically, the installation process should be "pretty easy" most of the time.

If it was a new laptop it may have a built-in wireless card.
If it does not then you have to buy a PCMCIA wireless card(goes in the slot on the side of the computer.
You also need a wireless router which attaches to your DSL or CABLE modem. The installation instructions come with the CD enclosed with each purchase. READ the instruction book so you do things in the proper order. It shouldn't take more than ten minutes to get you up and running.

Yes, you do need to purchase a router, network adapter, and a wireless network card if you want to have security on your wireless network (i.e. WEP or WPA).
