I lived there for a while and adored it. The climate is great, always toasty and dry. Job market is likely quite all right, big city and all, with surprisingly few hoodlums. Nice females, especially around Tempe, lots of Europeans, too if you likem, mostly Swedes, Germans, French.
As for where to live there: I've scooted all over that area to get an impression of where's best, and I'll spare you all the mediocre places, of which there are a lot. But the good ones, in my opinion, are of course Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, the Papago Rocks area (nothing special, but nice feel, and quiet), and South Mountain. You may like El Presidio at South Mountain for living in, or maybe even Papago Park Apartments (cheap, but as I said, great atmosphere because of those rock formations).
Parks: Think dry and bristly, it's a desert culture, friend. Not the lush New England type, of course. You wouldn't hang out there is what I mean, but they're cool for an early-morning run, especially the Papago Rocks, again.
If you're looking for solitude, try Apache Junction, but it's a long drive, and I think it's boring out there.
Phoenix is one of those places that has a lot more to it than you see on first glance, and that can also mean that you'll discover some great things way too late unless someone tells you about them.
Another one is Mill Ave in Tempe, great place to go out.
Say hello to Phoenix from me, I miss it.
Oh, and make sure you rent a place with a pool, no reason not to have one.

Phoenix is great! Best place I have ever lived. I am returning there in about 2 weeks! Honestly, a lot of property crimes in most parts of the city. Not too much violent crime, but you would be wise to stay away from south Phoenix or Glendale areas.

If you can afford it, North Scottsdale is best. Scottsdale itself is very nice, but it does have some high property crime areas in the south part.

Tempe is nice. College atmosphere, less crime.

In Phoenix, it's best to be north or east - less crime in these areas of the city, usually. Though there are some good neighborhoods left in the central part of the city. Stay away from anything close to the I-17!

Yes, it's hot in Phoenix. Everyone knows this, right?! But, if like me, you are a summer person or if you like sunshine - it is sunny more than 300 days of the year! And "winter" is about 6 weeks - end of December, January and maybe a week or two in February. It's great if you hate cold winters!

If you love waking up every morning and seeing sun outside your window, you will love it! I have been living in Yokohama, Japan for the past 2 years and more than half of the time, you wake up and its grey, cold and/or raining!

Women. Honestly, I've seen better! This is the only category that Tucson has us beat in!

Lots of public golf courses, some nice parks in the city as well. You will be surprised at how suburbia most of Phoenix is. You think of Arizona as desert, desert, desert. And if you lived in Tucson or other southern Arizona cities, you see a lot of cactus in people's front yards and rock gardens! But in Phoenix, you see a lot of big trees & large yards with green grass! Reminds me of California.

The job market is good and Phoenix is affordable compared to other large cities, like Chicago or Philadelphia.

Public transportation? Do you like buses? Because that's it! But the bus system is new, the city upgraded them a couple of years ago. However, the city is so large and spread out, getting around by bus to most places is not practical. You need a car!

Phoenix is clearly in a "boom" right now. Housing prices have almost doubled in the last 15 years, so has the population and all signs are pointing to an increase in both. The only sad thing is that in about 10-20 years the city will probably be TOO crowded and crime-ridden! But for now, it's nice!

If you are a sports fan, they just finished building the new Arizona Cardinals stadium in Glendale/West Phoenix. Fantastic! But it hasn't helped the Cardinals, of course! Looks like another 4-win season! The BOB (what used to be Bank One Ballpark) is new and fantastic also. The city of Phoenix has a lot of money - it will be evident to you if you live in a nice part of the city!

Oh, and I agree with the statement about Papago Park - stunning rock formations! And there is a small military base there, National Guard, I think. Which gives it a sort of "Area 51" feel - way cool!

Phoenix is pretty hot and dry durin the summer, the temps can get up to as high as 120 F. Durin the winter, it is very dry, lips will get chapped, but the temp will only go down to about 50 F. Duststroms are prevalent in the summer, and monsoons are severe during August.

The job market is hot, there are so many new jobs down there; everyone's going there for economic opportunites

The City of Phoenix is building a light rail in the center of the city, due to be completed in sometime around 2008.

hope that helps

I live in scottsdale and its freakin awesome. Sure it gets hot, but it also doesn't get 10 degrees during the winter so it's a trade off. And thats why people have the magic of air conditioners, or in most cases pools. The women, coming even from a straight girl, I can assure you are beautiful. Their personalities , not so much. The weather is beautiful most of the year and if you need water, its only about thirty minutes each way to a lake (depending on where youd be..), and san diego is only a four hour trip. Very nifty. I highly reccomend PHX, oh and about over crowded with mexicans, those mexicans are doing jobs at six am with leaf blowers and shovels that i doubt the rest of us really want to dirty our sweaters and new lucky jeans with.:-)

It is a huge City of about 6 million people. There is almost no "downtown" Everything is stretched out for miles and miles. It is very hot in summer and relatively cool in winter. There are plenty of jobs but I don't know if this place would be the place of my choice. Do some investigating and learn as much as possible before you decide. Good luck.

Hot , and very hot, then there is summer time when it gets real really hot.

Job market not so hot, homes are falling throw the floor way over built.

There is a great beach just no water, due to it being hot.

The public transportation sucks, the weather is hot/warm pretty much all year, and there are a few good parks.

I hear the weather is hot and dry, but I've never been there,
And I wouldn't know about "the woman" or jobs and stuff like that.

Hot. My friend lives in Gilbert (a suburb) and works in Phoenix... and I went to visit. It is a nice area... but it gets VERY HOT. I wouldn't want to live there.
