It went back to the Neolithic era, when men hunted and chased down food, while the women gathered plants to eat.
The men hunted because the women were of actual more value. What's more dangerous - chasing after a wild animal or picking shrubs out of the ground?
The women were of more value because they had the capabilities of producing children - and were the "holding tank" for the men to "spread" their legacies.
This, after time, began to be a sign of "weakness" in the women and that they had to be protected by the "stronger" males.
Women became a sign of wealth as well. In some areas, a ruler showed his wealth by owning several women, in concubines, and had slaves as well.
As time passed on, women had to be the host in the house and only had to provide for the children with love and cooking - while the husband had to catch the food/bring home the money to buy the food.
In Christianity, women are looked down upon because they took the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and "made" Adam eat it as well. (Although, I think this said a lot about women...they had to be tempted by Satan himself, while it only took a woman to tempt Adam).
In Islam, women are considered to be precious and are supposed to protected by the men. This is why they often dress in the long robes called burquas. This is because, according to Islam, women have so much power that they are capable of tempting men by just a flash of their skin.
Hope I answered some of your question!

in history and prehistory men allways had the physical advantage because as adults they are taller and testosterone helps muscle grow so they are stronger where as estrogen helps fat get stored on the middle so to protect a fetus. and religion is based on observation without technology. if you see lightning but you dont know about static build up in clouds youwill assume god is making it. so because people didint know about hormores and genetic growth rates they assumed god made men stronger and therefor superior. that is why people think that because so many people follow a religion they obvously believe that men are betteer because their religion says so. all christian religions (including islam) have one main reason for man being superior over woman and it is because of the story of Adam and Eve. Eve was a ***** and lied and ate tha apple then she tricker her innocent hubby Adam into eating it and so therefore she was a dumb **** and Adam was the innocent victim. humans and many other species of animal are like that but some that the female are dominiant are
praying mantis and black widow (along with a few other spider types) because they eat the male as nourishment for the eggs in thier bodies.
lions kinda because even tho the male runs the family and protects the pride from other males the female does all the hunting and feeding the family.

Woman in some places of the world today are still viewed as vunerable. This is because in the "cavemen" era the way their brian was wired was to stay in their shelter while the male goes out to hunt. And after years and years this "tradition" was passed onto the next generations. As religions were created they added that the women should stay home and the male brings the money. the women in some religions were considered sex objects and that they should bow to men, not singling one religion out but (cough cough muslims). But now this backwards thinking is changing. You can tell because some women are the breadwinners of their families.

To get a better understanding of this you need to understand how the human brain works. The best work written so far on this topic is by Leonard Shlain, " The Alphabet Versus The Goddess"
Fascinating study, that examines how society changed once we acquired the ability to write. Society changed from Matriachal to Patriarachal during this evolution.

i agree with you. many religions consider women as inferior and a mistake in the evolutionary process. two religions i know of that do not consider then as lowly are buddhism and islam. many say islam is a womanizing religion, but when you read about it more and you really dig into the many traditions and pasts, woman are actually more superior to men! in one tradition, it says that one man asked a scholar who deserves the best companionship to me and/or respect and kindness?
he answered: your mother
he proceeded to ask that question 3 more time, in which the scholar kept on saying: your mother.
at the last one, he answered your father.
this shows that your mother not only points out that woman are to be respected it shows that girls are supposed to be too.
in buddhism, they are equal. they can be priests and such. but seriously.*cough* *cough* who wants a trillion gods?
everyone in favor say i

men are better hunters, and physically stronger. That was the basis for it. Like any other species, the stronger of the two sexes is dominant. It's not always the male, by the way... look at Black Widow spiders for an example of a female being the dominant sex.

Those that believe that women are inferior are living their lives by man made laws and rules. Not by Gods rules or laws.

Because people don't make rules to control what they're not afraid of. They only try to control whatever it is that they're scared shiteless of.
I think it was C.S. Lewis who said something to the effect of, "The real dog never tells the stuffed dog, 'I'm just as good as you.'
