I'm a die hard Honda fan. But I'd recommend a Kawasaki KLR650. Surf the web. You won't read one bad word about it.

The Honda has been prov-en over and over again the parts are easier to find. Although look at the Kawasaki 650 That is the bike that they use in the military, They have been put through some real harsh conditions and are still going

You didn't say where you're starting from, but if you're planning a trip from the mainland USA (lower 48) to Alaska, then you're going to want a bike that has some good highway speed as well as off-road capability . I'd suggest you check out the proven world-wide champion of dual sport motorcycles... BMW!

While my top choice for a long-distance dual sport motorcycle would be the BMW R1200GS Adventure, they also offer a very capable bike in the 650cc range... the F650GS. Check out the Dakar model at this web site...
