It all depends on how the film is grossing as to how long it will stay in an individual theatre. Films are booked one week at a time, generally on the Monday before, based on the grosses from the weekend. For example, if a theatre has 5 films coming in, they will need to free up 5 screens, so the 5 lowest grossing films generally leave (or are stacked on the same screen with another film). Also, generally, the more screens the theatre has, the longer they will be able to hold a film.

Ok, you know how when the movie isn't in theatres yet but there are previews saying when it will be?
Then, when the movie does come out in theatres there are previews saying "....in theatres now" or "....now in theatres near you".
Then, the movie previews will say when it's coming out on DVD.

And how I can tell when they are making copies of the movies is when you see a preview of it then you don't see that preview for a few months. That means they're making copies to sell. Then about from a week to a month before it comes out on DVD there will be previews saying when exactly it's coming out.
