How Far Will 10 Grand Take You?

Alright I am a college kid from Canada. I am really familiar with the US culture. I am planning to go live for a year down in the states. So far I have $10,000 saved up. How long will that last if I lead a normal lifestyle? Will it last a whole year?

Is that $10,000 CD or $10,000 USD? Bit of a difference there. I am having trouble imagining what a 'normal lifestyle' would be for a college kid from Canada... Guess if you shared accomodations and never went out or drank beer or ordered in you might make it on that -- but don't plan on having Internet or a cell phone and you sure couldn't afford a car and insurance.... hang in there :-)

Depends where you want to live. If you share an apartment in NYC, that might cover around a years rent if you find a cheap place but that's not including any extra bills. It might even give you 1 or 2 thousand left over but I don't think that's enough to lead a normal lifestyle in NYC.

-I used to make about $10,000/year (off the books) in NYC and I was only able to survive because my rent was about $300/month. The rest was spent on food, bills, transportation, laundry and anything else I needed. I never had anything left over to save and I was really struggling.

It depends on how much you like to spend, but counting rent, food, gas and utilities I doubt it would last a year. But it certainly is a great start. I'd say go for it, if you need more money you can always get a job. Good luck and have fun.

Not likely, unless maybe you are going to be in school down here and won't be needing money to pay for housing, utilities and etc.

depends on what you want to do if you are hitting vages chances are it wont last you a month but if you are going to kentucky and you are school boy that would last you a year
