Hey Drummer,,,
You Heard right,,,sorta.
It's not that you must use DELL memory,,
It's that you must use "DELL memory".
Now,,is that clear as mud yet??LOL
Seriously now,,
DELL uses Intel Based Motherboards which are VERY demanding of GRADE and Style/type of RAM.
Therefore,,,,, while there's no Made-by-Dell DELL Memory.....,,
But there is Absolutely "DELL COMPATIBLE SPECIFICATION" memory.
The RAM to look for will say such as,,
100% Compatible,,,,
DELL Compatible,,,
INTEL Compatible,,,
LOW DENSITY,,,
"Gateway/Dell/Compaq/H-P/Sony" Compatible,,,
APPLE/MAC Compatible(apple has the Strictest~highest standard & is most universally compatible)
NOT-compatible will usually say:
Generic---
Hi-Density--
AMD motherboards Only--
NOT-FOR-INTEL---
Not-For-Apple---
TYPICALLY,,the Lowest Priced RAM will be NON-Compatible.
Sometimes the difference in price can be a bunch,,25~30% More for Compatible RAM.
I agree with the Other Folks,,,Ebay is probably best place to get a Good Deal.
There's Several Large,long-time well-established Memory Sellers on EBAY with Good Reputations.
In ANY case,,,Confirm ANY seller's Return/Exchange policy on COMPATIBILITY Issues.
If you find any RAM which explicitly states it IS Compatible,,,
you'll be OK.
It's not any big deal to find it,,,it's very Commonly available.
But a person MUST be aware that there's "Two Types" of the "Same Ram" floating around.
(The cheaper pricing can be attractive to bargain hunters,,,but not everybody can Use the cheap RAM---it just wont work in Intel-Based PC's)
2 Basic "TYPES",,,
INTEL Compatible/FULLY Compatible(LOW DENSITY)higher priced,,,
and
LOW Compatibility type(HIGH Density),,usually Cheapest
Hope that helps

Technically, Dell does not make memory. The memory they get will be made from the same manufacturers as any other company. What makes Dell's Memory a little more special, is they have been tested and certified for your computer.
If you went with a different manufacturer or supplier, most likely it will still work. I would say 90-95% of RAM will work with your computer.
I would recommend purchasing your RAM from an online store called NewEgg at http://www.newegg.com. Dell's prices are overpriced and you can save as much as 50% by going with a different manufacturer. PNY, Kingston, Patriot are the mainstream brands. If you want the best, then you can go with Corsair.
