I say this because the situation is bad in the sense that this is a secret a affair, that is so drama- filled, and basically needs to end, but the twist is we are like best friends. How can I back-off, but remain a friend at the same time?

you guys were never friends.
thats why i call a fake friend.
just let the time do its trick.
dont hang out w/ them out of school &
if they talk to you dont give out anything like
secrets and stuff.
just go with the flow but leave a distance between you and the person
and the person will get it.

i had a similar problem that i couldn't figure out easily, but after all i come up with the solution that it's best to lighten all relations and start to be more clear to show i'm not interested in being with those friends!....for instant u can explain a matter in your group of friends and start a discussion, something that u know they may have certian opinions and feelings about, and then express your own ideas and thoughts to show them your disagreement! This will make'em realize that u're not on the same side with them!...this problem of yours may happen several times during lifetime and don't worry about it!

Talk to your friend and tell them that you care about them but you disagree with what is going on and dont want to be apart of it and give yourself some space from them.
Hopefully this person will wake and realize whats going on is hurting your friendship. You can still be there for that person but dont discuss or be apart of the other situation. Happy holidays.

You know its hard, Period. If I were that person, I could be just Friends with a guy. Its usually them (men) who don't know boundaries. Sorry Guys!
