It is something that can take a long time to master but here are a few tips. Lie down on your back on the floor and rest a book on you stomach. Now just breath normally but slow and deep and notice how your stomach will lift the book as you breath in. This is the kind of breathing you want to have when you sing. When you are standing try placing your hand in the same place and get your stomach to move your hand out when you breathe in. Most importantly DO NOT lift your shoulders when you breathe in. Stand up straight and keep your chest expanded but your shoulders down or in a relaxed position.
That is just the very beginning. You would be well served in finding a good voice teacher to instruct you. A local university or music store would have a list of voice teachers in your area.

Good Luck

Your diaphragm helps you support your breathing if you do are breathing correctly. Your diaphragm in located toward the bottom of your ribcage and your mid belly area. As you breath in air it expands down and then when you sing if you learn to support from the diaphragm instead of from your vocal cords you will have more strength and stamina. most people don't think that this makes sense but once you learn how its easy. Supporting high notes from the diaphragm gives you more strength in your voice, more volume and a richer sound.

When you inhale try not to lift your shoulders or chest, breath as if you are filling your stomach. You'll feel much 'fuller' and the air support will be greater than if you lift your shoulders.

I think it's because your diaphragm is trying to return to it's relaxed position forcing the air out, because you have not lifted your shoulders, there is more pressure on it and it is being stretched more.

diaphragm
It's a sheet of muscle below your lungs - it causes the lungs to inhale and exhale - ask a voice coach (I'm not one) how it can influence your voice.
