It depends on what you mean by a period. Some women spot slightly (pinkish blood mixed with discharge) when the egg implants in the uterus. This is called implantation bleeding. If you have a full period -- red blood, normal flow -- you cannot be pregnant. When the lining of the uterus is shed, the environment is not condusive to supporting a fetus. That is why you get your period.
By the way, i have read many answers on this website which insist that you can have your period and be pregnant. This is simply, physically impossible. Again, once the lining is shed, there is no where for the fetus to implant. Normal flow, normal blood = not pregnant.

If you are having sex it's always a possibility that you're pregnant, especially if you've missed a period.
My period was 7 days late last month because I switched birth control pills and my hormone levels were adjusting.
I've heard of people having light periods while being pregnant or experiencing "breakthrough bleeding" after implantation.
Your best bet is waiting a week or two and taking a pregnancy test if you still haven't got your period.
Hope this helped.
