Folktales are often stories of animals that act like humans, and that live in a world of wonder and magic. Most of these stories convey a message or moral to the reader, or explain something in a creative way. Folktales are often passed down and retold from generation to generation.

As a teacher, we always read a variety of genres to the students to capture all types of writing. I have found that most folktales teach children morals. Most of them are outrageous stories but the underlying message has a moral on how to be a good person.

In the old days Grimm Fairy tales would be told to children to help them behave. They were horrible tales that would probably give children nightmares.
