a box turtle
OR
a red-ear slider

box turtle is your best bet for non-aquatic

red ear slider is a low maintenance pet and is semi-aquatic.

no offense but you sound like you want a turtle like people want chuihuahuas as toy dogs.

you probably aren't responsible enough. i've had turtles before and the'yre a lot of work and they can live up to 80 years. it can't be a fad thing, its a big responsibility.

There's no such thing as a low maintenance land tortoise. Even box turtles require special heating, lighing, housing, and a very varied diet.

If you want low maintence, buy a hamster. Reptiles are NOT for people that don't have plenty of time and money.

"The care and feeding is more complicated than is generally thought, and the daily maintenance of the enclosure and equipment and feeding soon gets boring for most kids. (Some adults, too, are dismayed to find that they can't just stick the turtle in a box or in their yard and toss lettuce to it once in a while.) "

I agree with Lexi. Turtles and tortoises need special diets, lighting, housing etc. If you don't have humidity and temp exactly right in a boxie's enclosure you can easily kill him. Turts and torties cost a lot more to care for then people realize and should not be impulse buys. If you are serious about wanting a turtle or a tortoise, you should, join a good turtle forum and research the answers to your questions, There are people who can help you a lot more on forums rather than on here where people post silly answers with silly advice. For example, you should not feed turtles or tortoises iceberg lettuce! There is absolutely no nutritional value in it. Also red ear sliders are by no means the smallest, they can get well over 12 inches given the proper care, and no turtle is low maintenance!

If you are serious about wanting one, come see me on turtleexchange.com/forum/ I am Julia on there and I am a moderator and I or lots of other friendly people can help you. Also try http://www.turtlesale.com/forum/ I am staff on there and am Grumps1stBorn, again lots of info and lots of friendly people to help!

Good luck, stop by, and remember, The wrong advice can kill!

It will cost you about $100-150 to set up a good turtle habitat for a small box turtle or a small tortoise. Once you get that going, the daily cares are not too tough.

Box turtles need 80% humidity, which is tough for the average person to provide easily and definately is not low-maintenance.

The Greek tortoise (Testudo greaca) or the Hermann's tortoise (T. hermanni) are OK choices, but still need space, heat, and sunlight.

I would not recommend a Red Eared Slider, I have one, but her tank is over 200 gallons, so its not something for someone who just wants a cool pet. Adult sliders grow to the size of a dinnerplate, and sometimes even bigger, and its not like when it grows up you can dump it in a pond outside, as they don't know how to fend for themselves and will starve to death.

The only thing I can think of would be a box turtle, but then again they poop in their water dish, and still grow to a decent size.

I would go with a box turtle...they don't get too big and are awesome pets...With any animal, there's maintenance but this little guy isn't too bad...If you want really small go with a map turtle...they don't get too big....
