How does one go about comforting/giving advice to someone who is going through extreme hardships in their life with no signs that things will get better in the near future. In fact, it’s pretty guaranteed that things will get worse and stay like that for the next several years. I personally have never been through something remotely has hard, so I have no idea what to say except that I will pray for them. Any advice?

Josey, at this time I myself am going through some what of a hard time. I'm at a job that I really don't wanna be at, my motor just went out in my car and I have no money for a new car. If the person your trying to help believes in GOD things will get better and don't pressure that person but suggest that person goes to church with you. If that's not a route you would like to take do what you have been doing which is being a good friend and stick by their side letting them know things could get better and also Josey pray for them more than you pray for yourself. I hope what I have to say is helpful.

The best thing to do is don't give advise. I'm sure lots of people will give their two cents worth whether good or bad. If this is a friend and your close, just be there for them. You might not be there physically but you can be mentally. Listen, so many of us have lost the ability to truly listen to those in need. Sometimes a shoulder or an ear is all that is needed. Let them rant and rave, cry when they cry and above all else use your head when they seem to have lost their mind. I always heard this and tend to believe it..."an acquaintance will tell you what to do but a friend will share your grief/happiness".

Yeah I do find that funny. I would always tell them why don't you help me find a job making that extra money then? That's like Donald Trump giving me advice on financial hardships
