It depends on the language. In Argentina it's called "el verano". In Brazil, it's called "o verão". When you translate these to English, they all mean *summer*.

It is still cold in winter where ever you are, unless you are near the equator. Southern Hemisphere has winter during the months late June to beginning of September. Summer happens Late December to the end of March. (opposite of northern hemisphere). Winter is still winter, just at a different time of the year.

When it is winter in the northern hemisphere it is summer in the southern hemisphere.
When it is summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter in the southern hemisphere.
It all depends on where Earth is in its orbit, because that determines which hemisphere is tilted towards the sun (summer) and which is tilted away from the sun (winter).

In the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Seasonal months in the Southern Hemisphere are:
December, January, February.......Summer
March, April, May....................Autumn
June, July, August..................Winter
September, October, November....Spring
I hope this clears up your slight confusion....:-) ....cheers....
