Society is different everywhere. Be good, help others, stay healthy, do the right thing and pray hard. Who said society is right? Society is just cultural thing. Your life should be driven by what is correct.

It is very, very simple. If you do something that pleases you, you are being true to yourself. If you feel anxious or resentful while doing it, chances are you are "doing what is expected of you" against your will. In that case you are being UN-true to yourself. Thoroughly compare the consequences of what you are about to do with what you don't want to do, & make a decision based on that. If it feels better after doing this, you are probably doing the right thing.

In other words, listen to your gut. It is almost always right. And be aware that we all fall short of this ideal. Making the honest effort is what counts.
