Gimli is by far the greatest character in Lord of the Rings, in the movies he breaks up the scene with his humour and the way he tries to compete with Legolas all the time. Also the fact that he is a dwarf is also cool.

In the books it would have to be both Pippin and Sam, since they are interesting and amusing characters. Pippin for his naivety and Sam for his unquestioning loyalty. As well as this, throughout the books they develop as people, Sam going from a gentle gardner who has never left his home town to a hero who is able to resist the ring more than Frodo, and Pippin growing up from a fairly immature young hobbit to a far wiser person who can face difficult situations and face them.

I have read the books, watched the movies, and am an officail Tolkeinist. I liked Sam for his loyal stubborness, Gandalf for his wit, humor, and dedication to Middle-Earth, Arwen for her resolve to follow her heart, Aragorn for his leadership, and Legolas and Gimli for the fact that they became freinds despite their differences. Oh, and merry and Pippin because they were so close in their heads and their hearts. And, of course, who could forget Frodo, the little wimp who had to get his finger bitten off in the end. I really think that they ruined frodo's character in the movie. he was way more couragous in the book.

Samwise Gamgee by far - he rocks as a true friend and companion...It's annoying that all the fangirlies vote Orlando Bloom (Legolas) when they have never even read the books etc. The destructive power of the silver screen I guess...

If you mean favorite character it would be this:

From the movie: Gandalf because everything he does is for the benefit of Middle Earth and the good peoples of the land. All his acts are completely selfless.

From the Books: Tom Bombadil, because he's such a fun character. I really missed this character in the movies.
