Why do Bush/NASA want a moon base? Could the money not be better used, or not used at all?

Personally, I would just rather not have the government spend this money period (and cut from my tax bill), but if they were going to spend it couldn't they put it to better use on health care, education, or even defense? Is a moon base really necessary?

In the short term, absolutely. The billions required could definately be spent on better things. However, people often forget that so many things (products, technologies, sciences) came out of the space program when it was in full swing under JFK. In the immediate it would not be much, but 50 years later, who knows.

Yes a moon base is needed. It will be a stepping stone on our way to mars. We are overdue in getting the conquest of space going, man must either take the stars as God wants or perish when the earth is used up.

That's the way to keep highly educated folks employed and also make lot of money for the interested parties.The Rule of thumb is only 5 to 8% of the money is really used on the actual project the rest is you Know What????????? ends up in the hands of Big Time Operators

since it is funded by the US govt. The govt. essentially found a job in which it could make money without taxing americans to death
