You do not build something to find out if there's a phenomenon behind, particularly if it comes from a cartoon.

IF there's a phenomenon that can be exploited, then something could be built.

The Stargate concept and wormholes are pretty much the same thing...spacetime warped into a "shortcut" through a fourth dimension. Einstein demonstrated this as a possibility with an idea called the "Einstein-Rosen Loop".
Still only theoretical...we won't know if it's actually possible until we come up with the answer to quantum gravity.

Scientists, like everybody else, enjoy a variety of forms of entertainment. Some to like "Star Trek" and the like, some like quality science fiction and some don't care for science fiction at all.
In terms of actual science, scientists are reluctant, to say the least, of expending time, effort, or energy on things which are theoretically not possible. They only have so many hours in a day, you know.
Science is not an individual or group of individuals sitting around and saying "What if..." or "Just imagine...." Ideas like that are the province of fiction or whimsy.
