Andrew Johnson was the only president truly raised in poverty. He was an apprentice to be a tailor. That was going to be his profession for his life until his wife taught him to read and write. He then ran for local office and gradually became President.

Technically, it was George Washington. He never completed his education and had no leadership experience besides being a general. Policy-wise, it was Andrew Jackson.
