The word ''lesbian'' is derived from Lesbos (ÛÃÂÃÆòÿÂ), a Greek island located in the East Aegean Sea where the ancient Greek lyric poet Sappho lived and ran a school for girls in the 6th century BC . Many of her poems are about her passion for her students. Sappho's literary association with love between females has led to the term ''lesbian'' having its modern meaning, as well as its rarer synonym '' Sapphism ''.

The Greek isle of Lesbos
"The word 'lesbian' is derived from the Victorian interpretation of the poems of Sappho, whose poetry was taken to mean sexual love rather than emotional or Platonic love between her and other women. Because of this association, Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, birthplace of Sappho, are visited frequently by lesbian tourists."
