I try to always use it when I'm actually doing it. But I see that so many people use it when something is so not funny. Has it just become a symbol to mean that you are joking around???

All the time!!! I use it so frequently that I actually point out that I'm really LOLing when I type LOL because I rarely laugh out loud. Sarcasm is hard to translate when just typing, so I rely on smiley icons and LOLs to help get my point across. Plus I use it as one of those polite laughs where you really don't think the person is funny but you laugh anyway. I should take after you and use it sparingly.

I have defintely observed this on different websites or web "gatherings" like this site, and people do seem to use "lol" when discussing something that isn't funny at all. When I use "lol" I try to only use it when I seriously do think something is funny. I also sometimes use it to show that I'm in a joking or playful mood. I think "lol" can be used in either situation, although I do not understand the reason why people use it when nothing is funny or playful. It might be an awkward response to something, or a way to feel like they fit in online. Who knows?

definite - approximately 50% of the time - I do chuckle out loud yet "loud" as in making the sound no longer burst out loudly. in all possibility you're able to call it a snickering laugh. Cheers Oh great Wizard.

I use it when I think something is funny, but I'm not always really laughing out loud.

I either use haha or :D. It shows that I'm laughing, or happy, not serious, without having to try to be like everyone else. I only do them when I laugh, which can be very often, but that's not the point.

Yeah, I use it when nothing is funny at all, it's just a symbol. When you're ACTUALLY laughing, it's more common to use XD (looks like someone laughing if you tilt your head sideways) or LMAO (laughing my *** off) or ROFLMAO. (Rolling on floor laughing my *** off) for when you're REALLY laughing.
