As I can remember, it was to be a messenger between the gods on Mount Olympus and the people on Earth, but I don't think I can get any more specific than that. Hope this helps.

If I recall correctly--he was a flying messenger from Zeus sent to the witch Calypso to release Odysseus to be able to return to his wife, Penelope.
