My check engine light came on a couple days ago and I'm wondering what could be wrong.
The temperature gage reads normal
All the fluids are good (brake, power steering, coolant, oil, washer)
The belts are tight
Everything sounds the same when it runs
The car performs the same as it allways has
Does anyone have any Ideas? I'm more of a do-it-yourselfer, so I'm not looking for everyone to tell me to take it to a registered service provider. Thanks for your help!

It means you have a DTC stored. You need to have it scanned to find out what the DTC is before you can go any further with your diagnosis. If it's an '04 shouldn't it still be covered under warranty? The common part to fail on all Fords is the DPFE sensor. The part costs about $100.00 from the dealer, and takes all of 1 minute to install.

Well, the first thing you should do is either purchase or rent/borrow a scan tool from your local auto parts store. Find out what the code is and the possible causes.

Now before you head out to do this, check your gas cap and make sure it's tight. If it wasn't, that was probably your problem.

Getting a check engine light to 'go out' isn't always an easy thing to diagnose. Getting a certified mechanic to check it for you IS easy and doesn't mean he has to perform the repair.

Regardless of what I've said above, you should still get a mechanic to check your car out for you. It could save you alot of anguish and frustration in the future. Besides, who says that just because we respond that we are experts?

My husband is going so a techniques as hooking up the automobile to our laptop and runs checks on the automobile (because of the fact that is have been given some stuff achieved to it) and while it runs lean, it has too plenty air in the ratio (back). there is a few thing that a mechanic can do with a working laptop or laptop software which could restoration that and not make it run so lean. wish this facilitates particularly.

If the engine has a timing belt or chain, and also has a few miles on it, your light may be caused by excessive play in that drive train. Or something similar. I would suggest not delaying in finding out what the problem is!

No way to tell. If you really want to do it yourself, spend $100 and buy a OBD-II reader which will tell you the code behind the check engine light.

You have to have this read to see what sensor has failed or what it has detected
