The City of Joy by Dominique Lapierre. It's not courageous in a military sense, but it is about the suffering of impoverished people in India. Monsoons ruin their fields so they have to sell everything until they are forced to move to Calcutta and work for pennies while living in slums. There are several families in the book and also a catholic priest who comes to live with them and be as poor as they are.
