In general some hermit crabs don't have a long life span, but lack of water can cause them to die. Also having their cage at a temperature that is too cool can kill them.Their cage temperature can be no lower than 72 degrees F. Don't put their cage next to a window either as it will raise the temperature to much and bake them. Leaving fruits and vegatables in their cage for over 24 hours can make them sick. When they molt thier skin leave it the cage because they will need the nutrients from it and when they molt if there is another crab in the cage seperate them because when one molts the other will kill it. Also if there is not another bigger shell for it to move to that will kill it. Make sure that your water dish isn't to deep because a small hermit crab can drown and make sure the water in the dish is free of chlorine as that will kill a crab to. If you have a land hermit crab they must be bathed once a week. Not washing out their dishes can leave oil and molds behind that can kill them. It's also important to put toys in their cage because if they're bored it's not good for their health. I hope this helps!!

People who buy them like you. Hermit crabs don't make good pets and should not be bought, they cant be bred in captivity because of the ideal coniditons of the wild are too hard to mimic and when you buy one you kill another, because that means the petstores need to buy more if they see they are selling.

Your question is somewhat vague but besides the obvious answers you should be aware that although a particularly hardy form of marine life they like all marine creatures can be very sensitive to changes in their environment and there are several books available on crustaceans (tough reading) that will help you better understand how to create a solid stable environment for the animal

Another hermit crab for sure. They have cannibalistic tendencies. (the ones found in saltwater tanks, that is).
