My husband and I went to Vegas last summer and he fell in love and really wants to move there. I love adventure and the idea of living in a city( we live in a small town in Maryland right now), but we will be leaving family. I am also a beach fanatic and I am not sure about having no ocean near me. I am also scared of the crime rate there. Does anyone have any advise or an opinion.

I currently live in Las Vegas and am thankfully moving to NYC. There are pros and cons to the city of sin and I will list them for you here.

Pros:
1. The weather here is beautiful. You can't beat the constant sunshine.
2. The job market is fantastic. Lots of jobs and lots of money to be made.
3. There is always something to do.
4. We are a couple hours away from Los Angeles and there are nearby lakes such as Lake Mead.
5. School systems are good.
6. Cheap food, moderatly priced living.

Cons:
1. This city is very transient. Lots of people don't stay here making it hard to make friends. There is that lack of "Home Sweet Home" here.
2. Crime Rate. That depends a lot on what area of town you are in though.
3. Sadly, people here (residents, I mean) typically have drug, alchohol and gambling problems. Drugs are big here and very easy to get.
4. Everything on the strip is really expensive. Plan to spend at least $200 an evening if you want to go out.
5. The heat in the summer can be over the hundreds. It gets so hot they recommend you do not go outside.

Overall, this town is eh. I am 28 years old, drug/alchohol free, and not a huge club kid. I am looking to settle down and start a family and this isn't the place to do it. If you are already established and you want a fun place to live then its not so bad. Think it over.

My Husband bought a house here a few years ago, I recently moved here in June from the S.F. Bay area. I too, Love the water, but Lake Mead is huge and near by, there are so many things nearby it's a great place to live. I'm six miles from "The Strip" in a very nice neighborhood with the greatest playground real close by! I Love it here!

I hate to say it, but any friends or family I've known who live or moved to Vegas want to move out or already have moved out. One friend said that she would never raise her child in Las Vegas. The others are just tired of how busy it is.

Good luck convincing your husband. Tell him it can be a yearly vacation, then it's more like a treat. It loses its luster if you're there everyday.

It sounds like the things you dislike about Vegas considerably outweigh the things you do like. If I were you and wanted to move to a city, I'd move to a place with beaches and a lower crime rate than Vegas that's close to your family.

Vegas is a great place to vacation, but I would never want to live there. Outside of the overcrowded, tourist infected fun areas, Vegas is one big desert.

For water, Lake Meade is about 30 minutes away.

Yea well I can just imagine why your husband fell in love with vegas I mean, anyone would....Bright lights and glamour, its one of those cities that never sleeps!!!!!! so uh, while YOU are asleep, wonder where he would be, hmmmmm!! lol

Anyway, vegas can be one of those fast life things and if you arent use to it, things can get carried away....You say you're from a small town so to convert from a small town to a mega fast life city, I wouldnt reccommed it, but to each its own.......

Besides, you say you'll be leaving family too......I'd stay put...its nothing wrong with visiting vegas once in awhile if he likes it that much

It is a city like most others as far as crime. No reason for special worry in solid neighborhood. Only 20 miles from Lake Mead for water & an hr or so from Mt Charleston for skiing. 220 miles to LA as well. No reason not to come as long as you come in with your eyes wide open.

Wait wait wait....You're worried about players shooting themselves in Vegas!? Hello, IT'S DETROIT!! They can have plenty of that there. Besides seeing a Red Wings game, the greatest team ever, what else is there to do in Detroit besides get drunk and shoot people?

Its your choice. SIn city isnt the place I would want to be living. I dont know if you have kids, but is that the life you want them to see as "normal". sex., drugs, gambling, the porn, and the streets, are just not the stuff I would want to live around. Trust in your husband and yourself is another consideration. With the slutty girls everywhere, and the porn offered, anyone could be tempted. Not to say it would happen, but could happen. Just lots of things to consider.

You only live once, and family will always be there. I say go for it. If you don't, you may always be wondering about it. But I would take time to research it out (jobs, housing, etc.) and make an informed decision.

Good Luck!
