Ionic: Bonds between (usually) metals and nonmetals. One of the elements will give electron(s) and become a positive ion. The other will take that/those electron(s) and become a negative ion. Since opposites attract . . . well, they are stuck--compound. The positive charge must be equal to the negative charge. That is way water (H2O) has two H, H is +1 and O is -2, so you need two H's.

Covalent: Bond between (usually) nonmetals and other nonmetals. Both elements usually want electrons so they share (always pairs) with the other whatever number they are short.

In both cases the valence (last or outer shell) electrons are they only ones involved.

Get an "A".
