If you are out of your contract period you can approach your Network provider whom you had the contract with, to provide an unlock code. This usually takes a week to come through and normally a charge of £15 (may Vary).
There are people who also unlock handsets at mobile phone stores, you will find in town centre or market stalls. They will charge a fee too.
I would insert a pay as you go sim from another provider, it may be the case it is already unlocked as some network providers don`t lock phones, people like orange do.

depends on which contract it is on, for example, 3 make it almost impossible to unlock their phones but all the others you should be able to do, most markets will have a stall which offers this service, it may just be as simple as contacting your network and asking for an unlocking code for the phone.
