I have lost most of my hearing in one ear now. It has the feeling that it just needs to pop...but it won't. What do I do? Do I need a doctor?

it could be wax build up, and it is very common...and if you use qtips or cotton swabs, you are probably packing it in worse. i thought i was going deaf, turns out i had this, the nurse flushed my ear with warm water...they have this whole hose thing that pours water very fast into your ear and at the same time suction hose that pulled it back out, along with the wax build up..you would not believe what can fit in your ear. yuk. it could even be a fungal infection...which definitely needs medical attention, and hurts like heck when they clean it out, but then will be fine with a few days antifungal drops. you could try some over the counter ear wash and wax removers on your own first, but as impacted as it sounds, i'd say go on to the doc.

I would suggest that you try some antihistamine such as Benedril, if this does not work then you should see your doctor or an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat specialist). You probably have fluid putting pressure on your eardrum. If it has been there this long, if you do not already have an ear infection, you are at a huge risk of developing one, as this is a big breeding ground for bacteria You may need to get an anti biotic going as well. I work for an ENT, and this is quite common. Good luck!

I have a good solution...works most times. Get a q-tip. Plunk it in some warm water...has to be warm to hot...but NOT HOT as in scolding your ear hot. Just hot/warmish enough so you can bear inserting it into the ear canal...and remember you;re more sensitive to heat in there...so go slowly and try it out a little at a time first before sticking it in.

Anyway...q-tip inside the ear...not all the way in. Push it slightly in-out-in-out. usually works very well. If it doesn't you may be blocked up because of other reasons like swollen glands etc. Worth a try though.

Have you tried using Q-tips? If it isn't working or you're doing it too much, you must have pushed your earwax back in your ears; that's why it hasn't popped. When i was little, I had to go to the doctors to get the wax out of my ears. My doctor told me not to use Q-Tips because they push your earwax back. You should only use it after taking a shower to make sure there is no water.

If you're wondering about the procedure... from experience I'll tell you this. First, they drop a liquid into your ears to make the earwax soft, and then they suck it up with this skinny silver vaccum. It hurts at times (if you have big chunks of earwax or if it's far in your ears), but after doing it, you'll feel happy that your ears feel comfortable again. If you have any questions, ask. I had to get earwax out of my ears many times because I went surfing a lot when I was young.

Yes, you should see an ENT (ear, nose, throat doctor) tomorrow. Tell him or her your symptoms. My guess is that you have a large blockage of wax in your ear canal, which will have to be removed by flushing it out. This would explain why it is occurring in only one ear.

But whatever you do, do not attempt to remove ear wax by yourself. The human ear is a very sensitive instrument and should only be treated with the expertise of a doctor!
