I play the game and I know exactly what you are talking about. You buy the game. "Online Charges may apply." In this case, they do apply. You are charged about 15$ a month to play WoW. This can be payed in different ways though. monthly, every three months, every six months, etc. So, yes, they still charge you to play online after buying the game. You are asked to create an account before you can enter the world. In this creation, you set up the payment plans. You will not be charged until you do this. But you will need to do this to play it.

I have been playing Wow for just over a year now - there is a monthly/quarterly subscription fee. Most of the boxes I have seen now have a month or so of free game time included.

This is probably to hook more new players for the up-coming expansion.

All things considered, I think the fees are justified, the game is well maintained, there are regular updates/patches and the game world continues to grow and expand, I am a casual player (1-3 times a week), as such, I have not bought any other games since WoW as there would be no time to play them! The only advice I can offer is to find a good guild - this really makes the game.

If you are interested in MMORPG (Massively, Multiplayer Online Role-play Game), you might want to consider other options - EVE or Guild wars depending on your style of play. The World of Warhammer Online Craft is not due till 2008 - I may consider changing over then.

When you buy the game it comes with a two month subscription card, after that you will have to pay $15 a month to play. You can continue to buy subscription cards (sold separately) or you can enter a credit card number to purchase the subscription online.
