The Nokia 6230i used to be on a monthly paid contract with O2 and I am trying to get it to work with my pay as you go SIM card which is with Freshmobile.

If you are out of your contract period you can approach your Network provider whom you had the contract with, to provide an unlock code. This usually takes a week to come through and normally a charge of £15 (may Vary).

There are people who also unlock handsets at mobile phone stores, you will find in town centre or market stalls. They will charge a fee too.

I would insert a pay as you go sim from another provider, it may be the case it is already unlocked as some network providers don`t lock phones, people like orange do.

yeah, you can use another sim in the handset, however if the handset will not accept the sim, this means the network has locked the handset so only sims from their network may be used and accessed.
All you need to do is have a word with the network the phone was registered with, I believe you said 02, they will get the unlocking code from the manufacturer, which may set you back approx £20. And when they receive the code they will contact you and give instructions to unlocking the handset.

The Moneysavingexpert forums have a section where people help the unlocking of phones in the UK. There is also some general information in the top posts that might help.

Talk with your previous phone company and ask them to do a SIM Subsidy Unlock. Then you will be given a code to input in your phone allowing you to use your phone with another carrier.
