The computer with the one speaker -- there is one plug that runs both speakers. It has to be a certain type of plug. Looks like a mini telephone jack from the old days. See if it has a black plastic band on the silver part. Okay, I've had that type of plug not fully pushed all the way in and only one speaker was working. Sometimes on an old plug-in the plug had to even be wiggle ever so slightly backwards out to make the connection to both.
Okay, if you have two computers, you can try the speakes from the totally dead computer and plug it into the computer with one speaker. This begins to narrow the field down. If the totally-dead computer speakers work on the half-dead computer we're getting somewhere.
Don't worry. You can unplug and plug in speakers while the comtpuer is running. Just remember which hole the plug came from. Sometimes computers have a hole for microphone and one for speakers. If you look close on that part of the comptuer it will have a little picture with a microphone or a speaker.
If speakers work on the half-dead computer. The whole dead computer might need its volume turned up. Should be a little button on the bottom right of your live computer screen that looks like a speaker. Press it.
Good luck. I tried to help you the best I could with the info you gave.

I have the same problem on my iMac. only the left speaker makes noise, but I'm getting the whole song.
If you're only getting half of the song, say, music and back-up vocals, then you have a problem either with the connections or the speaker itself.
If you're getting the whole song, however, than your speakers do indeed work and the other is probably emitting either a very quiet bass noise or you have the sound functions set on one speaker.
As for your other issue, it could be that your speakers just aren't compatible with your operating system. Re-check the packaging for compatability and if all else fails, buy a new set.
