The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the immediate cause, and then Mussolini and Hitler declared war on the USA.
"December 11, 1941: Germany and Italy declare war on US
Germany and Italy have announced they are at war with the United States. America immediately responded by declaring war on the two Axis powers.
Three days ago, US President Franklin Roosevelt announced America was at war with Japan, the third Axis power, following the surprise attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor.
Today Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, made his declaration first - from the balcony over the Piazza Venezia in Rome - pledging the "powers of the pact of steel" were determined to win.
Then Adolf Hitler made his announcement at the Reichstag in Berlin saying he had tried to avoid direct conflict with the US but, under the Tripartite Agreement signed on 27 September 1940, Germany was obliged to join with Italy to defend its ally Japan.
"After victory has been achieved," he said. "Germany, Italy and Japan will continue in closest co-operation with a view to establishing a new and just order."
He accused President Roosevelt of waging a campaign against Germany since 1937, blamed him for the outbreak of war in 1939 and said he was planning to invade Germany in 1943."
But FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) had been aiding and assisting Great Britain in any way possible (Lend-Lease is a good example) before that.
"When France fell and England came under siege in 1940, he began to send Great Britain all possible aid short of actual military involvement"
FDR definitely wanted to get the USA involved, and, even if the Japanese hadn't attacked, I feel sure he would have found a way to join in sooner or later - most likely sooner.

After WWI, the United States became very isolationistic. We didn't want to take part in any more European wars. WWII started in the late 1930's, with Germany's aggressions towards all of it's neighbors. Even though President Roosevelt wanted to join the war to help England, the popular sentiment was to stay out of the war. Up until we were attacked by Japan on Dec. 7, 1941 (Pearl Harbor), all we did was help with supplies. The attack on Pearl Harbor enraged the American people and enabled Roosevelt to declare war.

Japanese attacked us at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941.
We declared war on them. They were member of the Axis, consisting of Germany, Italy and Japan. Declare war on one meant war with all.
Germany was already engaged in an attempt to conquer all of Europe, with their allies the Italians.

Is this a trick question? Pearl Harbor was the final straw. Europe had been on us forever to get involved but we said no until the attacks became personal.

Japan was an ally of Germany. Without declaring war, they bomber Pearl Harbor , killing many and destroying many ships. America immediately declared war on Japan.
Because they were buddies, Germany declared war on America. America did not enter the war, it was brought to America by the Japs bombing, and the Schweinhunds declairing war on us.

we were not going to get involved, but then pearl harbor happened. so, that became the main catalyst for our involvement.
however, if we hadn't, then the nazi regime would not have been stopped and the world would be a very different place.
also, nazi germany would have spread throughout europe and would have become a HUGE threat to the US.
it was better to stop them asap instead of waiting.

The U.S. was actually in an isolationsist frame of mind because of the Depression, feeling that no one appreciated our involvement in WWI and that no one enforced policies that were placed on Germany after WWI. After the attack on Pearl Harbor though, the country realized that it had to enter WWII.
