Is a conclusion the place where you got tired of thinking?

Once you have made up your mind, are facts but a mere annoyance?

I think this is a very practical question that could be misconstrued as a philosophical (or hypothetical) one.

Here's my practical take on "beliefs": If we didn't occasionally doubt our beliefs they wouldn't be beliefs...they'd be known facts. There is a difference, isn't there, between a fact and a belief?

So beliefs never start with an irrevocable, fact-based conclusion. I'd say they're more likely to flow from a strong assumption, one that seems more plausible than any other.

But to adapt a belief that runs contrary to proven facts is also nonsensical.

An example of this debate that we see here on YA arises when those who say you can't prove that God exists ridicule those who nonetheless believe in God's existence. I like to point out that the claim that there is "no God" is ALSO an unproven "belief". Neither position is incontrovertibly proven...so both are beliefs.

Valid but contradictory beliefs can coexist, each being an acceptable conclusion arrived at by clear-thinking people.

You absolutely must read C. S. Peirce's essay, "On the fixation of belief."

If you never doubt, never question what you believe, then you are either brain-dead, or you are blessed and cursed by unchanging satisfactory conditions. But it's unlikely that you're brain-dead, and it's still more unlikely that your circumstance doesn't present you with new problems that your current beliefs are not adequate to. Even if you are profoundly conservative, those inconvenient facts will erode your beliefs until you are driven to find a new belief that can accommodate the novel facts--that NEVER remain 'mere annoyance', but that always stab at the soft spots in your understanding.

You are doomed to think anew. Enjoy it as best you can. I do.

Yes I have and still do quite often.

This is exactly how I was able to break free of the far fight Republican beliefs that I grew up with. And trust me, it isn't easy becoming a far left liberal in an all far right conservative family.

As far as making up my mind and no longer listening to facts, that might be true for some but not myself. I actually enjoy very much catching myself believing in something then finding that I was wrong by real facts. That always reminds me not to listen to rhetoric or propaganda and to always GET THE FACTS before jumping to a conclusion.

I question every concievable thing anyone says or does. I even question everything I see, sort of like the matrix. I push most of these questions aside until I have time to ponder on them however, like going for a 3 hour drive, and I have to sit in the passenger seat and do nothing.

I like to make speculations about every action one does, and on every level. By this I mean like Bush's decision to invade Iraq. No WMD's found. So they could have been buried, or given to someone else, especially since Saddam was given an 8 month warning. Of course he could have invaded to gather oil for himself and haliburton, or he could have invaded to prevent Saddam from selling the oil to russia for weapons, which in turn he would give to terrorists. Not really sure which one is correct right now, but each has just as much plausibility as the other

The facts as you suggest them are not set in stone but are opinions held by the majority of people .
Did you know that After brown verses board of education entire city's and counties removed all the minority people of color forcing them from there homes and land .
Quick claim deeds registered in county offices became the method to remove the property ownership of thousands of Black families .And this happened in the 1950's .
A little known fact because it is not taught in school .
Or that Columbus never stepped foot in north America ,but rather killed tens of thousands of peace loving island natives in his quest for gold and the conversion to Christianity. The brutality ,and slaughter of peaceful natives who often got fed to the hounds or burned at the stake .
Are these just other tails of history recorded by imaginative men . Who knows what the truth is anymore .Does it matter . Living in a police controlled state is better then fending for ones own safety and forced to work to raise a family .
Those with strong backs who labor hard have little to say about how they are paid . Those who sit in offices who collect so much yet provide little , control the police who hound the working people .
What is the truth and reality of life .
What you have is only maintained by the threat of force . The love and help of the people is no longer needed in a police state because you do not need them to protect you .
What kind of world do we live in . Well lets say it is the one of your own making . The fact is O.J.Simpson did not kill his ex and Ron Goldman but rather is innocent of all charges .
What man deems as the facts can change according to who is looking at them and with what intentions they have ..

So all I can tell you is create your own history and record each day what you have done and this will tell the story of one man as seen through his eye's .The world my record things in a different manner .

The voices in my head would subside after I beheaded the evil master who was controlling my mind .
The police record that a man brutally cut the head off a business executive yesterday morning and is in custody at this moment .
So who is correct and what is fact . Two sides to every story and you must decide for yourself what to believe .

I overthink everything and question myself always. I torture myself with this. When I have made up my mind it's usually based upon facts and observations.

It is human nature to question your beliefs, and is a necessary characteristic to be able to change if beliefs lead you astray. Beliefs are as fluid as the human mind itself. They evolve based on circumstance and environment.

Sometimes I question if I am right. I question if people could really be that evil, then I look into further and am more convinced then ever that I am right.
