house is warm now, no smell of gas.......just to be sure wanted direction of 'open' and 'closed' for the flume.

well its good that you don't smell gas however carbon monoxide is odorless so you wouldn't know turn the fireplace off and use a mirror to physically look up the flute a good way to test also is light a candle and blow it out and place it near the opening of the fireplace. if the smoke from the wick is gettin sucked up the flute at a good pace, chances are its open

To be sure of this. You can reach up into the chimney, and at the point where the handle is you can feel the flue baffle and tell whether it is open or closed. Thee is a round plate attached to the handle and it just rotates to open or close the chimney. That way you know for sure.
