I'm not sure if what you mean by 'controlled group'.

Here's one type. In scientific research, especially in medical research or psychology, tests scenarios are used to determine if the new drug or technique is effective. Several groups are created. At least one group receives the new treatment or drug. At least one group is set aside to receive traditional (or no) treatment. The group(s) that don't receive the new treatment are called the 'control' groups.

The new treatment groups must show that they are more successful than the control group (old or no treatment) for the new treatment to be adopted.
