I have a friend who owns a lot of Wiccan books and I read a lot of them. All the ones she owns are by Silver Ravenwolf. She explains all the rituals, times of celebration, herbs, gems, and things like that. I Suggest starting with TEEN WITCH and then read TO RIDE A SILVER BROOMSTICK, after that read more or less of anything you want by her.

I think everybody should read "Book of Shadows: A Modern Woman's Journey into the Wisdom of Witchcraft and the Magic of the Goddess" by Phyllis Curott. It's a brilliant book that is not only immensely informative, but also inspiring and just a dang good book to read. I always fall back to it when I'm feeling a little low or want a particular inspiration.

Similarly, I love Denise Linn's "Sacred Space". It always puts me in the frame of mind for doing the work, which is what everybody needs. I also enjoy

And lastly, the only book I ever really use for spellcraft is the fantastic "Spinning Spells, Weaving Wonders" by Patricia Telesco. It's very straight-forward, written in a friendly, informative manner (no dark mystery and cloaks and daggers here), teaches you how to create your own spells, which is THE BEST, and is just really, really good. I highly recommend it.

There are tons of books out there, some better than others. If you're an absolute beginner and young, you should definitely try to check out Silver Ravenwolf's stuff (she has a ton of books), because she is great for introducing you to the basics.

Good luck!

If you're exploring religion, Wicca sounded interesting, and you're curious to discover what the faith is about, there are a lot of very user-friendly, modern beginner's books written by a wicca practitioner called Silver Ravenwolf. They give both basic philosophical background and some practical, easy to understand basics for Wiccan spellcasting.

BUT... if you're looking for a genuine pagan faith that's been around for millenia, Wicca ain't it. Wiccan "magick" is supposedly based on folk traditions and mythology from the European and Native American cultures, but the work of Alestair Crowley, a self-proclaimed magician from several centuries ago who was paid by a publisher to write spellbooks when that sort of thing was in vogue, is actually the basis for many of the rituals and forms used in Wiccan magic, with a handful of New Age ideas thrown in.

If you're interested in wicca for the principles it represents (Do as thou wilt, an it harm none; any wrong you do will come back to you threefold; respect the earth and nature), then I would get a book on the philosophy and meaning of Wicca, (of which there is an entire section of in borders and barnes & noble) and if you're still curious, perhaps try exploring some Eastern philosophy as well.

If you simply want to practice magic(k?), not necessarily in a religious sense, then as silly and boring as it sounds, study the basic properties of crystals and plants- the scientific ones as well as the spiritual. Exercise your intuition and study people and the way they interact. Most of being a practitioner of real magic consists of changing the way you use your mind and instincts, and before you start trying to explore other senses, make sure you are using the senses you already have as totally, intelligently, and efficiently as possible. THEN find a book that gives instructions how to exercise your mind and open up the Sight (a sort of sixth sense that use to "see" auras, spirits, and enchantments.) And once you've done that, then is time to explore various spells and rituals and see what works for you.

But if you are turning to wicca to gain control or understanding of abilities or experiences you've already had that can't be explained by science or conventional religion... uh, good luck. I spent years studying every variation of wicca and any other belief system involving magic that I could find, in an attempt to find ways of controlling and becoming in tune with all the supernatural chaos of my life. When it comes down to it, the genuine, experienced practitioners admit that in the end, all the rituals and rhyming spells and pentagrams and wands are just tools, made up to help a person focus. In other words, someone made them up and wrote them down. For some people, they help. For others, they don't. If you have the sight or are picking up on other people's thoughts, Wicca may work for you. But if you're inadvertently healing people, astral-projecting, and breaking the laws of physics, waving an althame and lighting candles is probably not going to cut it. Chaos magic has fewer limits and doesn't require as many accessories, but unless you can stomach religious philosophy and ancient powers being manifested through masturbation, drugs, and hollywood icons... enough said.
In the end, when dealing with power, you have only instinct, caution, and your own experience to teach you, unless you have the luck to run across someone else who's had similar experiences. If you want to talk about it, email me (ethersflame@yahoo.com) and I'll see if I can offer any advice.

In any case, good luck.
