Bayleaf like you cook with? Full sun. Water till well established and then after if there is a bad drought. There are a couple of different types, some are more fragrant than others. I got a cutting from a friend and it took maybe 7-8 months to root it. Now it is about 5.5 ft tall.

first of all if you are trying to make gumbo you need red bay (Persea Borbonia). it likes lots of water and full sun. here in mobile alabama i like to plant them with a little (very little ) afternoon shade because i think it helps to keep leaf texture a little softer for cooking with. also fetilize the hell out of it every 6 to 8 weeks and water it every day when you do that heavy type of fertilizing or you will kill it by chemically burning the roots.
