This has confused many people. Your friend is not alone. The answer of course is that his real name is "Winnie the Pooh" or "Winnie ther Pooh". But definitely not "Winnie the Pooh Sanders". The Sanders sign was there when he moved in. The real "Mr. Sanders" was the prior resident of the house where Pooh now lives.

Mr. Sanders is the name above the door at the house of Winnie the Pooh in the children's books by A.A. Milne. When Milne says that Pooh lived under the name of Sanders, he means it quite literally, and is not suggesting that Pooh's surname was Sanders or that he took on an alter ego.

It's not Pooh's name at all but the set-up for a joke: Pooh "lived in a forest all by himself UNDER the name of Sanders." Get it?

I think it was an old sign that fell off of a post box, the USA type that stand at the end of your drive. Christopher Robin found it and at the time he couldn't read and neither could Pooh, they just thought it looked important.
