We have people starving to death in our country and someone is paid millions to throw a football? I think athletes are overpaid to say the least. There are people who work just as hard or harder than anyone in the NFL. And only make a fraction of what NFL players make. I think pro sports is begining to be corrupted by a bunch of money hungry bastards! I'm kinda sick of even watching pro sports. The NBA is the worst of all! And then you have people who act like certain players are "Gods" or something. These people are ordinary human beings like anyone else. They aren't some kind of supernatural being that you should bow down and worship. Anyone can make the NFL or the NBA if he wants it bad enough! Its about hard work and Dedication. People run around acting like this type of Goal was only meant to be acheived be certain people or something. If anyone deserves the kind of money that pro Athletes make it would be our military service men and women!

Ban Pro Sports...NO..and your right they are Overpaid and there not gods...I do agree that the Military Men and women should be Paid alot more than they are...but along with all that you have said Starving ppl are Ordinary ppl also..who didnt give the hard work or dedication into being something they wanted or into there lives so why penalize the Pro athletes for doing what it takes to be labeled a PRO and make the money they make. So you ask Ban Pro Sports...NO

No. And athletes are not paid too much. Not sure when you arrived to Earth from your home planet, but people here are not paid according to how "hard" they work, as determined by your own opinion. People are paid according to the supply and demand for their labor.

In the case of sports, "demand" is very easy to see -- it's the money that sports fans spend on tickets and team merchandise, plus the advertising money that companies spend with TV and radio networks broadcasting games. And those people aren't spending money to see thousands of local hacks playing badly -- those people are playing to see only the best of the best athletes, which is why "supply" is very limited in this equation. Demand is huge; supply is tight. And whether you like it or not, a pro athlete brings more tangible benefit (in the form of entertainment) to far, far more people than almost any other profession you could think of.

The claim that athletes are paid "too much" is nothing except your own personal subjective opinion, and since that means absolutely nothing to anyone else outside of your own brain case, society has chosen not to let that particular standard dictate all the economy's rewards.

You make some good points but banning Pro Sports isn't one of them. The average career in the NFL is 4 yrs. One bad hit and your career is over and you may be handicapped the rest of your life. But be that as it may, pro athletes are being paid for their entertainment value. That's why NBA players earn more than their female counterparts in the WNBA. Would you ask the same question about TV or movie stars? Is Jim Carrey worth $20 mil. a picture? Is Charlie Sheen worth $350,000 per show?

I agree with you about the payment for services.

However, this is a by-product of a capitalist system. If there is demand, then society will provide a supply.

If we all boycotted pro-sports, then that would break the system.

Think back to the Roman period. It wasn't about money, but eventually the Romans' society crashed. At their peak though, people were nuts, paying money to go to arenas to see people fight lions to the death.

Not so far from where we are with pro sports.

I believe that Hollywood and pro sports will be the downfall of America. Think about it...all that money going to so few for such a small benefit back to society.

In fact, much of what we get in return is negative benefit, because those highly paid folks abuse their status in many ways.

The system would work if they donated much of their proceeds to the needy, and the education system, but that doesn't happen.

I agree with the 1st answerer. They're paid too much, but really, that the most retarded idea i've ever heard. I'd go to war with a person who banned the NFL. Why don't they ban acting and CEO's too? See how ridiculous your claim is now

I dont think we should ban pro sports but i think pro sports except for baseball, SUCKS ***! they are boring as hell and college offers much more to watch and they are playin for braging rights and pro sports are just playin for the championship and b/c they are gettin paid. If a team loses in the pros it doesnt matter tht much and in college it makes headlines for several days!

.
I really feel we should quit wasting our time and money on Pro sports and put our support to the College level.
.
If College sports team players know there is no sports after college then they will certainly have more drive to get the best education possible for them.
.
If we support the College level sports more then we are helping our future!
