People know that there is no way that anybody involved in the production of an "applause worthy" movie will ever hear their "appreciation" for such movies (besides the millions of dollars that are made from these movies). The reason people applaud is to agree with other people clapping (on a sub-conscious level) that this particular movie was really good. Instead of shouting it out across the theater. Of course, as in every aspect of life there must be a leader, or someone to start the round of applause.

Usually when and if a film has had a profound affect on someone or just has 'it', it warrants applause. I have been to three films where the audience clapped afterwards; The Pianist, Boyz in the Hood and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Well because people liked the movie and want to address the person whos opperating the film perjector that it was a good movie and to address everyone in the theater that it was a good movie..also letting them know that they might come back tothe same theater for more movies! Hoped that helped.

I think that they clap/applaud at movies because they think it was a good movie and the movie was not wasting their time. I clap because I think it was a really good one and it wasnt boring.

Um... I've only been to one where they applauded and it's usually because it's a heart warming feeling.

Maybe they think the magic clapping fairy will record their clapping and take it to Hollywood so that the actors and/or actors, the directors, and who ever else will hear them.

In Puerto Rico people do not clap after the movie ends... but if it happens on your city it must be because of all the excitement the movie produced on them.

i like the two, yet I oftentimes decide to observe them at homestead. i've got not got a dvd participant now. If there's a action picture out that's truly captivating to me, i will bypass to the theater. action picture theaters are lots nicer than they have been 20 years in the past. interior the 70s and 80s they have been very dingy and grimy with crappy seats.

you probably watched Harry Potter or something. That audience clapped before and after the movie. It was ridiculous.

Like everyone else said... because they liked it.

It's really no different then clapping or cheering on a sports team on TV... they can't hear you either.

Ever talked to the radio? Same thing :)

Because they have been obliged to act as couched potatoes during 90 ' while the movie has take them in a turmoil of emotions and so it is a way to relieve themselves of that kind of "stress".
And obviously to express their appreciation...
But as many people say, it does not happen everywhere...
And this is interesting!
