You christians love to state a verse from Leviticus "You shall not lay with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination."

You use this verse to attack gays, but have you ever looked at any of the other verses?

Leviticus chapter 19 verse 27 states, "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head and do not clip the edges of your beard"

How many of you christians have ever done that? I don't see any Christians protesting beard clipping. If you have a problem with gays, why not hair cuts?? Oh yeah, that's right, you just can't stand that someone might be different.

How many of you christians wear clothes made of cotton and polyester?

Leviticus states "Do not wear clothing made of 2 kinds of material" Chapter 19 Verse 19.

Any christians have tatoos?? Leviticus states " Do not put tatoo marks on yourself" Chapter 19, verse 28.

And my personal favorite, "If a man commits adultry with another mans wife, both shall be put to death" Chapter 20 Verse 10.

Obviously Famous Ted Haggard, a preacher who commited gay sex should be put to death.

So christians, I have a final question for you. Why is it acceptable for you to attack gays, and claim that the bible states it is wrong, but not attack beard shavers? Are you afraid of something different? Why can you make exceptions to must of the laws in leviticus but not the gay statement?

The bible has so many laws you don't follow.

Foolish republicans.

That's because people randomly select biblical passages that conform with their own prejudices. Part of the problem is that the Bible is a difficult and heterogeneous ancient text, and many people who attempt to "interpret" it are barely literate enough to tackle a poorly written young adult novel.

There's also a lack of awareness that many of these strictures come from very specific and no longer valid concerns. For example, with any knowledge of the historical circumstances, you'll realize that all of the dietary restrictions (eating shellfish is also an "abomination") were prompted by genuine problems relating to food-related illnesses (i.e., standards of sanitation and lack of refrigeration made certain things positively dangerous to eat). At that point also, the mortality rate was far higher and the birth rate lower, so there were frequent population crises--particularly worrying in instances where your survival as a people depended on numbers--so non-reproductive sexual relationships were viewed as an actual threat to the well-being of the community.

I think that the problem is that people regard "sacred" texts as ahistorical, refusing to acknowledge that certain restrictions were motivated by no longer relevant concerns, and so they persist in their idiotic literalism.

I'm a Christian and I believe it is wrong to practice homosexuality. I've never attacked a homosexual for their lifestyle, but when asked (i.e. right here) I will gladly offer my viewpoint that the Bible contains a lot of information about this topic, and should be carefully searched out for answers. All human beings are hypocrites (that is also a Biblical viewpoint). So you can't judge the book by it's followers, you just gotta read the whole thing for yourself. The New Testament (which was written centuries after the Old Testament laws you mention) contains the details of a "new and better" law. Without getting into the specifics of it, suffice to say that not everything you read in the Old Testament has relevance in the New. But homosexuality is still called wrong in multiple places throughout the New, so that's what I believe. What's important is to understand that everyone has their faults and that we can't go on justifying them. Christians have their failings, just as gays/ gay Christians do. The answer is not to "tolerate" that is to say overlook it and be happy, but it is to take a "sober estimate" of yourself, and see where you have gone wrong. When each of us can admit our failings before God, we can make progress. As a Christian I leave it to God/the Bible to tell me what's wrong with me, and ask God's help to improve. It's not a perfect system, but it's the best one.

human beings consistently omit the element of those questions. that is not being asked why can some one not sanction a marriage or union in front of God the question being posed is why can a matching intercourse couple not have the same criminal privileges as a pair of opposite intercourse? Marriage is now not basically a union made in front of God in on the instant's international yet a criminal shape that helps the events specific rights that civil unions do not. One significant dazzling that a criminal and binding marriage supplies to couples that a civil union lacks is the rights of next to relatives. If some thing happens to a minimum of one and that they choose an advise or it happens maximum oftentimes while plans could be made for this reason, that finally ends up falling to the guy's relatives and not their significant different. whether that became into their desires many places won't know it. Now by using watching marriage in this variety what's incorrect with comparable intercourse couples start up waiting to relish this protection?

Pretty extreem if you ask me, to put to death??hmm . for the record,the verses are telling what sin is and its not meant to make one hate another. We all sin and to judge oneanother is a sin in itself. Alot of christians forget what the bible really teaches. Lead by example and love the same. A real christian with those values dont care what orientation you are to love you. The blind one on the otherhand thinks everything the bible speaks against is a reason or excuse to not treat onanother like the bible sayes. Instead they hate,ignore and judge them. Lets not forget that you dont have to take there lifstyle as yours,just show them what real love is...

Gays should not be attacked! they should be loved. We all fall short of the glory and we are saved by grace not orientation.

Another thing...Alot of the things you site are tradition not law. To trinm your bierd is not a hell producing sinn. Raed further with a open heart ..To properly intrepit the bible it is a fact you need to pray befor and after to get the message,one verse might read one way the forst time you read it and another the next..

I am a gay Christian.

Christianity is based on the first 4 books of the New Testament. Other books in the canon are important to Christians for various reasons, but our religion is based on the teachings of Jesus. Jesus never said anything against homosexuality.

The laws in the old Testament are part of Jewish law. Christians are not under Jewish law. Easy way to remember this: Jewish law commands violence against certain people (stoning, etc.). Followers of Christ are commanded to be non violent.

I am not a Republican, I am a Libertarian. But in most cases, I have more respect for those foolish Republicans, than those socialist Democrats.

You have conflated a LAW (don't have homosexual sex) with a DRESS CODE (don't clip the edges of your beard, don't wear multi-fiber clothing). They don't have the same degree of moral imperative.

The prohibition on gay sex in Leviticus 18:22, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination," is repeated by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:9, "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind" and in Romans 1:24-27...

"Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves... for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

The "error" that Paul mentioned was the homosexual act, and the "recompense" was disease (e.g., hepititis) and anal deformity leading to incontinence. God sometimes punishes sin in the natural course of things, here on Earth, in advance of Judgment in the hereafter.

So there's no mistake about it. In the Bible, God forbids homosexuality. That's not a mere interpretation, nor is it a minor matter such as a dress code. It's a Divine Decree, which all genuine Christians recognize, and which, in true Christian theology, will carry all homosexuals into damnation and Hell.

THERE ARE NO BIBLE PASSAGES that endorse or express approval for homosexuality. There are Bible passages that strongly condemn homosexuality. The fact that other Bible passages suggest disapproval for other things has no bearing on the correct Christian position on homosexuality.

Jesus didn't say anything one way or another about homosexuality. But from that silence you may draw NO conclusion regarding the proper views for Christians about homosexuality. Of course, and naturally, gays want to interpret the lack of any definitive statement from Jesus on the subject in a way favorable to themselves, but that's no better, logically speaking, than doing the very opposite! The proper Christian position on homosexuality is drawn from those parts of the Bible that DO say something on the subject.

I don't want anyone to be confused on who I am to speak. I'm not a Christian presently. But I was raised by a minister and taken to church every Sunday for religious instruction for the first 18 years of my life. Although I don't profess the faith, I do still understand the faith, and I'm not about to let any devious gays or liberals mislead anyone about the faith.

Good question. There is a hypocrisy in the way Leviticus is used by the right to justify anti gay legislation. Many of the other answers are attempts to rationalize that hypocrisy.
My question to them would be, if certain portions of the bible do not need to be taken literally, then why do the passages about homosexuality need to be strictly adhered to?

As a straight guy, I am finishing up a class on homophobia which has been an interesting experience. We actually had a reverend who is a lesbian come and speak to us about the bible and what not. Very interesting topic! Sorry I can't be of much help, but one thing I have seen is that different people hold different interpretations of this issue and how it is stated in the bible.

Just because many people do those things, doesn't make them not wrong to do, and in the case of homosexuals, have you ever heard the phrase, "love the sinner, hate the sin"? That's what a true Christian does.
