Sounds like the switch mechanism has failed and/or is failing to engage. A switch replacement sounds like an easy fix, but, may not be required. First, check the wiring. A loose wire can be the culprit. Loose wiring sometimes won't carry the required current for efficient operation. Next, many thermostats have mechanical functions which manage current array. Be sure these are not loose and are performing their designed function.
The internal functions of a thermostat, electrical or mechanical, are important and if they cannot be returned to their original condition, they should be replaced.
If you have a basic understanding of electricity and mechanics, an internal inspection of the thermostat should suffice. Although, the high cost of heating is better left to the professionals. There are also safety issues that have to be addressed.

The switch that you are pushing in, probably is for lighting the pilot light. After the pilot light is on, then you have to turn the knob to the on position, or the flame will go off. Then turn the knob up to the number on the knob to where the heat is comfortable for you..

I am assuming you are referring to a pilot light. When you press the button to light the pilot, you must hold the button for about a minute before releasing. If the pilot still goes out, the thermocouple for the pilot is bad and needs to be replaced.
