The shifter on your Accord has an interlock which will not allow it to shift out of park unless the brake pedal is pressed.
The way it works is: When you step on the brake, the pedal contacts a switch which sends a signal to a solenoid actuator located at the base of the shifter, releasing the shift lever allowing it to moved out of park.
I'd suspect something is wrong with the interlock system. Either a bad brake switch, solenoid or simply a blown fuse. The most common failure point is the brake switch.

As a test, you can override the interlock by placing a spare key into the override slot. It's located on the console and may be hard to spot. Just look for a plastic cover about 1/4 by 3/4 inch square and pry it off with a small screwdriver. Insert a spare key, and start the car and try to move the shifter. Keep your foot on the brake while trying this as it will probably come out of park.

Take it to a mechanic you can trust and tell them the symptoms. Remember, never tell a mechanic which part you think is bad. They will often replace the part you specified and the problem won't go away. Make them troubleshoot and replace parts based on their own diagnosis.

Hope this helps,

Dave

the psychic mechanic says: this is an older car, many plastic parts., there is a linkage in the selector lever that has broken. you should feel slight give when you push the button on the shift handle. if this feels lose or spongy there is something wrong with the button linkage, If something has fallen down into selector housing this will need to be removed, get strong flash light to look inside selector housing look for something lodged inside

make sure the tranny has enough fluid.

can also try rocking the car back and forth while someone gently pulls the lever down into Neutral. especially if you were parked on a hill and the tranny's been holding the weight of the car you need a little leverage to unstick it.

the brake pedal switch is dead and the position sensor will not allow the gear selector to release form park to drive selections THE OTHER answers do not help you ---there is also a switch at the bottom of the steering column and check for good connections-----if you can't find anything that you can do then the answer is a mechanic....good luck and thanks for listening

I'm betting that there is a switch that requires your foot to be on the brake in order to put the car into drive. If your brake light switch is bad, or this circuit shorted, then that would cause this symptom.

Put your foot on the break, at the same time as moving shifter.Or turn the steering wheel to make sure its not locked.Or rock the car back and forth until it slips out of gear.
