I can't understand how anyone favors the BCS system. Under the current system there is only one bowl game that I watch: the championship. Why watch the others? They are dead end streets.
I read a book by James Michener 30 years ago (I think it's called "Sports"). I believe I read in that book the idea that you could keep the current bowls but morph them into a rotating playoff system. I would favor 16 teams which means 4 weeks of playoffs during late December-early January when college football is normally dead. The most popular bowls could rotate the finals and semi-finals each year. Then you've got no more USC fans crying that they were champs when everyone else knows LSU was the champs.
The coaches that say 4 more games is too much are full of hogwash. 8 of the teams would only play one more game. 4 more teams would only play two more games. Drop the current schedule from 12 games back to 10 like it used to be and have a playoff system. I think it's even good for the schools and the bowls because then the Michael Jackson Playschool bowl and all the other bowls I've never heard of will really mean something and I would watch it.
NCAA football is the only major sport without a playoff and it sucks. End of story.

The issue is not the lack of playoff it's this bogus way they select a "title" game. I say scrap this "title" game notion and go back to the way it used to be handled. Coaches and writers polls looking at everything after all the bowls and voting on a national champ. Yes, some teams were shafted every now and then, but the little guy got a shot to shine. Heck it was the old system that gave BYU & G.Tech national titles! Problems with playoffs. 1. NCAA- they control the money from march madness and came up with some bogus formula on how they disperse the funds. The major conferences/a.d.s don't want that to happen. In football the cash goes straight to them! 2. Playoffs would kill the bowl system- The bowl system is the life blood of FBS athletic departments in which major fund raising and revenues from bowl games are used to float all the other sports and if you take that away you pretty much would eventually kill most of the FBS programs. If I have the choice between a 16 team playoff and my Alma Mater having the opportunity to be selected for a bowl game, screw the playoffs! 3. These coaches are liars- They can say they want a playoff, but the fact is these goofs have a chance to end a bad year on a good note by winning a bowl game and you better believe those guys secretly cherish that opportunity. You put in a playoff there is only 1 winner and that added pressure is not what most coaches are looking for!

Well, it's a lose-lose scenario.
Even if we all wanted a playoff system, it's gonna take a minimum 10 years to get one. If we didn't want one, we'd have to deal with the flaws of the BCS. I think the BCS is much better though. What I like is that it deals with strength of schedule (SOS). The SOS is what got Notre Dame in this year (although they didn't win their huge games). It also is what kept Arkansas out, they played a Division 1-AA team, Utah State, and UL Monroe. Those games won't give you BCS status.
And I think the big problem with the playoff system would be the debates. With the BCS, we argue over 1 team that might not deserve it. With the playoff system, say there are 8 seeds, we'd have to argue over 4-5 teams on whether they belong there or not. One D. 1-AA college in Texas threatened a seeding official because their team wasn't in the playoff system. It would be ridiculous to see this in D. 1-A.
Keep the BCS

Take away the computer Voting and the Human Voting and let the Teams decide who plays and who doesnt on the field...Take the Top 2 teams from Each Confrence and put them in a playoff...Then No one can complain and whine about there team being left out becasue of a computer or Voters leaning toward there Fav. Team..If your Team doesnt make its there fault and no one elses.

They need to go back to naming the National Champion at the end of the regular season, then they can have the Bowl games, make their money and hopefully there would be less controversy over the pick.

Playoffs...they do it in D-II. I was at all of Texas State's playoff games last season...so much fun, and definately the way it should be.

I like to see a play-off system. Take the Top 16 teams or something like that.
