Generally, when speaking of soft tissue injuries, helling takes place in three phases. They are the inflammatory phase, where an acute injury goes throught the normal process of swelling because of damage to the tissue. Next is the repair or regeneration phase. During this phase all cellular debris is removed and replaced with the necessary materials for the so called "patch" of the injury.During this pahse scar tissue should be maged to keep it to a minimum. The last phase is the maturation/remodeling phase. It is merely an extension of the repair phase to complete the process of healing. Keep in mind this is an extrememly brief synopsis of a very complex function of the body. Look it up some time. Very interesting subject.

the body sees a wound and produces blood to go to that wound, the blood coagulates (hardens) and forms a natural band-aid(or a scab if you prefer). Then, underneath this scab, it produces the cells needed to replace the damaged tissue. Not so much fix the damaged cells as it replaces the missing ones, it takes a little while to create the proper cells, and put them in the right place, so healing takes time. If your body is healthy and strong, however, it can do this process faster, and more efficiently.
