Heyyou is right...its the binding process, as well as the better materials used that make a hardcover book more expensive from the get-go. There are many more steps to producing a hardcover than a paperback, then add in the added weight, and shipping goes up...etc, etc, etc...

A hardcover book is the publishers first go at selling as many copies of this book as they can. Since they want everyone to buy this new book, they spend alot of time and money promoting it. Finally, no matter how much hype there was in the beginning and no matter how well the book sold the first time around, the sales eventually decrease. Well, there is still money to be made from this book in airports, to people who just want a nice, inexpensive read, etc. So they publish it in paperback to squeeze all of the rest of the money out of the book, even if it's not much.

The binding process is more expensive. Also, the cost of shipping is more. Plus, hardcover books tend to stay in better shape than paperback.

Obviously most of the reason is because the quality is better. Also, at least with brand new books (best sellers especially), the publisher typically only makes it available in hardcover the first few months so they will make a little more money off of it. Sort of like going to see a movie in the theater when it first comes out versus renting it or catch it at a dollar theater. The most profit comes from ripping people off.

Hard cover books last longer, even though it's heavier, it does not break easily, and the paperback ones also get messed up when it is on water

it's partly b/cthey cost more to make than a paperback book, but it's also, b/cthey are usually the first released copy and therefore cost more b/c people are more excited about the book and willing to pay big bucks to get their hands on the book!
take care.
