Is it possible that you have confused a "senior/ junior god" figures with "senior/junior devil" figures. I read lots of fantasy books, and the only one that I remember which seems to have a similar plot is "The Screwtape Letters" by C. S. Lewis. Take a look at this site and see if you think that this could be it:

If that isn't it, also take a look at Pratchett's early work. I also remember a short story by Robert Silverberg which had this theme. I think it might have been in his collection "Beyond the Safe Zone," but that was only a short story...So it is more likely to be the "Screwtape Letters"...Yes, I'd love to know what this book is. It sound interesting.

Sounds very interesting. the only book i can think of with a similar plot is the Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis, but i think they are devils rather than god figures. good luck!
