I wouldn't close the account and start a new one. You can work on your habits. If you don't, then you will have problems with your new account as well. If you have online banking, I would look at your recent transactions and match your receipts to the transactions listed.

Call you bank automated phone line and check your balance.
My banks it has two balances.
It say's current balance is $70.00
It say's available balance is 60.00 if you had overdraft it would say $560.00. But you still only have $59.99 you can use without accessing your overdraft protection. You go by what your available balance is minus your overdraft protection and minus any monthly service fees.
If you use it a gas station pay at the pump. You need to subtract that from your available balance plus $1.00 or the hold amount if any. The hold amount is removed after 7 to 10 days.

review your bill each month from the bank and make sure all charges were made by you. or go online and check daily at your account.
my credit card company that I use emails me anytime a transaction is made on my credit card. If I receive an email saying a charge at such and such gas station I know I didnt make then you can call immeditely. transactions made and emails are sent right away, never really much of a delay.

Set up electronic banking and track the account on line. Wells Fargo has a nice facility for this.

You can track your account online. Sign up for online banking. You can look at your transactions or you can download into a financial program such as Quicken.

Get an interim statement, compare what is on there with what you can remember. After that keep you records current and "smarten up"! Not to be rude here - but good God we must watch our finances or some one else will and you will find yourself broke.

I'm guilty of this. Just check your balance, make a budget until your next pay period and start again...
